The Church and Cistercians in Medieval Poland
Dans ce volume, les recherches de Józef Dobosz, l'un des principaux historiens médiévistes polonais, sont rendues accessibles en anglais pour la première fois. Il rassemble dix-neuf études axées sur le rôle de l'Église, de l'Ordre cistercien et d'autres institutions religieuses dans l'histoire du royaume Piast dont la Pologne est issue. L'introduction offre un large aperçu des deux premiers siècles du règne de la dynastie Piast après le Baptême de la Pologne en 966 jusqu'à la fragmentation du patrimoine Piast au cours du XIIe siècle. Les essais suivants examinent les circonstances de la fondation des principaux monastères cisterciens de Pologne à Sulejów, Jędrzejów, Wąchock, Owińska et Łekno. L'auteur analyse les moyens de leur établissement, évalue les sources existantes et les replace dans le contexte des politiques économiques, politiques et sociales de la dynastie Piast.
Les études offrent une analyse approfondie des motivations des principaux dynastes, magnats et prélats pour soutenir la mission de l'Église en Pologne et permettre une intégration plus poussée du christianisme dans toutes les couches de la société. L'auteur examine les plus anciens documents polonais relatifs aux monastères cisterciens et aux chanoines réguliers (en particulier les chartes de fondation), y compris les falsifications de chartes. Les principales conclusions du volume sur l'impact du christianisme sur la Pologne naissante sont basées sur un examen détaillé des chartes médiévales, du rôle des scriptoria, des identités des personnes importantes de l'Église et des archives historiques plus larges.
