Le monachisme est devenu une partie de la culture européenne dès le début du christianisme et s'est développé en une institution puissante qui a eu un effet profond sur l'Église, sur la société au sens large et sur le paysage. Les communautés monastiques étaient aussi diverses que les sociétés dans lesquelles elles vivaient, suivant une variété de règles, construisant des monastères influencés par des idéaux communs et pourtant divers dans leur régionalisme, tout en contribuant également au bien-être économique et spirituel à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de leur enceinte.
Ce volume interdisciplinaire présente la diversité du monachisme européen médiéval avec un accent particulier sur son impact sur les environs immédiats. Géographiquement, il s'étend de l'extrême ouest en Irlande, en Écosse et au Pays de Galles, à l'est en Roumanie et dans les Balkans, en passant par le nord de la Scandinavie jusqu'au sud de la péninsule ibérique. En s'appuyant sur des sources archéologiques, artistiques et architecturales, textuelles et topographiques, les contributeurs explorent comment les communautés monastiques se sont formées, comment elles ont créé un paysage monastique, comment elles ont tissé leur identité avec leur entourage et comment elles ont interagi avec tous les niveaux de la société pour laisser une empreinte durable sur les villes européennes et les paysages ruraux.
